1. Starting on a Somber Note!

Read the following news item. Consider the following responses:

Praise God for your freedom to publicly worship our Lord!

Pray for the persecuted church around the world.

Consider your own willingness to put your life on the line for Christ!

INDIAN BELIEVERS STAND FIRM IN FACE OF GROWING PERSECUTION

While the persecution of believers across India is on increase, Open Doors is helping Christian pastors, leaders and other believers by conducting "Standing Strong Through the Storm" seminars in the country. In the seminars, teachers give students the tools they need to stand against persecution, discussing questions such as, "Why does God allow suffering?" John Mathews, a regional representative for Open Doors, recently returned from a trip to India and was impressed by the quality and effectiveness of the seminars and with the dedication of the participants. "Despite the persecution, they want to press forward with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because of the persecution, their churches are growing and that is encouraging to them. They were at the seminar to meet with other leaders who were experiencing the same thing, and thus they could network and encourage each other. It was very touching to see. One pastor had been killed recently. His widow was there, and the other pastors and leaders reached out to her to encourage her." Mathews urges believers to pray that the church India would continue to grow while standing strong against relatively new persecution.

2. Helpful Hint on Becoming Cross-cultural #1

Principles for dealing with a different frame of reference:

  • We all see the world through the experience of our cultural heritage.
  • We tend to think everyone else sees it the same way and when people’s responses don’t meet our expectations we are confused.
  • We judge quickly and negatively about others.
  • When we learn about their cultural heritage we are better able to understand and accept them.
  • Withholding judgment allows us to stay open-minded in order to learn.
  • Asking questions can help us understand their heritage and response and communicate more effectively.

5. Helpful Hint on Becoming Cross-cultural #2

Seek a friendship at school or work with someone of a different culture. This can be a family that has recently moved to the States or an exchange student. Here is a fact; over seventy percent of college age exchange students are in the United States for an average of seven years and never are invited into an American home!

Things to do with your new friend:

  • Study all you can about his/her home land and culture.
  • Have them cook ethnic food for you or by a cookbook from their country and cook together.
  • Learn phrases from his language.
  • Play games from his country.
  • Have open dialogue over differences in faith and world view.
  • Reread all of the hints from Helpful Hints #1 above and but them into practice!

9. Final Stuff!

Let’s Fish started today with a readership of nearly 100 people! This e-mail informational letter will cover all mission outreach news of the BFC. Here is how you can help:

  1. Inform us of all of your missions trips both teams and individuals domestic and overseas. We will publish all the outreach that is happening around the BFC. We also desire to keep statistics of all BFC outreach activities.
  2. Consider opening up your missions team to others beyond your church. We will promote all such opening here.
  3. Promote Let’s Fish in your church. Make sure all short term participants, Urbana interested students, Youth leaders, mission organizers, and pastors are part of our group. To join simply contact us at office@bfcbom.org.

Final Thought:

Most career missionaries serving around the world look back on a short term missions trip as the foremost influence God used in their lives in making a decision to serve Him full time!

Until next time,

May we be a shining light to the nations, A shining light to the people of the earth; Til the whole world sees the glory of Your name. May Your pure light shine through us.
