January 29, 2003 edition This is the second issue of Let’s Fish. Greetings from Allentown! Bible Fellowship Churches sharing resources to evangelize the world. A place for the exchange of ideas on short term missions projects and local outreach. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." All responses can be sent to office@bfcbom.org Current and past issues can be found on the web at: www.bfcbom.org look in “Mission Events” then Let’s Fish

2. More information on the Paris France opportunity. To get more specific about the internship program that we are offering, it is a 6 week program (May – June) which involves training, mentoring and ministry involvement with one of our church planting teams. Interns would be actively involved with the Paris Prayer Conference and would also attend language school during this program. For more details or information, contact: David Riddell at mission@francevie.org
3. Missions opportunity starting tomorrow!! That’s right tomorrow! Pray for God to give you an opportunity to share your faith at school or work. “How is that missions?” you ask. Every missionary that ever went anywhere went on the mandate given to the church by Jesus in Acts 1:8. Jesus clearly states that our first missionary experience is AT HOME! Let’s face it. IF you are unwilling to share your faith with a friend, you will never make the grade as a missionary! Here is a prayer: Lord lay some soul upon my heart, And love that soul through me, And may I ever do my part, To win that soul for Thee.

15 CHRISTIAN STUDENTS IN INDIA SHOT TO DEATH IN APPARENT 'ACCIDENT' Fifteen Christian literacy students in central India were shot to death by police on Saturday, Jan. 25, after they were reportedly mistaken to be members of an extremist group. Reports indicate that most of the 15 were associated with one of Mission India's literacy programs. "The incident was a tragic accident," said Mission India President John DeVries. Spokesman John DeGroot agreed, "This is a case of mistaken identity. From everything we've heard, this is not another case of ongoing persecution." The incident occurred in a politically unstable area where extremists are known to be active. First reports indicate that the victims were "mistaken by the police to be extremists and were killed by gunfire." The 15 believers were members of a Christian fellowship and were walking through the jungle to a town where a Sunday-morning worship service was to be held. A police party was apparently patrolling the area to curb extremist movements when they thought the group was terrorists and opened fired on them from behind. Most of the victims died immediately, and "several others were injured." (Mission India/Mission Network News) Are you willing to stand up for your faith? Please pray for your brothers and sisters that worship Jesus in very difficult areas of the world.

9. Ways to raise money for a missions trip (Ideas from InterVarsity staff and students) Auction Services "Have students offer an item or a service (like bake a cake, tell a bedtime story, cook dinner for two, mend clothes) and the other students bid on it." Mike and Chris York, InterVarsity staff, University of Virginia
A Fun Run "Plan a fun run and have students secure pledges per miles." Marlene Hensley, InterVarsity Area Director, New York
InterVarsity Alumni "Appeals to alumni were sent out to help fund students participating in Urbana and summer mission projects. The alumni gave generously to help the students. In order to receive funds from alumni, students covenanted to write personal letters after Urbana or a mission trip thanking the alumni and informing them of their experience." Tom Bentum, InterVarsity staff Oberlin College, Ohio
Special Plate Dinner "Host a special plate dinner of foods from the country to where students are going. Charge $10 a plate and include some fun instructions under the plate like: 'Read this Scripture at your table,' or 'Pray for the meal and the country it represents,' or 'Send this postcard to the short-termer this summer.' Be creative." Nairy 0hanian, InterVarsity staff, Boston
Parable of the Talents "Give every member in your group $2. Ask them to invest it by using their talents over the next 3 months to multiply their money. Ideas could include: · Buy thread and open up a mending clinic for a fee · Buy spray starch and offer to iron friends clothes for a fee · Change the oil on friends' cars for a fee · Buy a cake mix and sell individual slices · Buy a six pack of pop and sell individual cans for $75. · Encourage students to keep reinvesting their earnings into more jobs. At the end of 3 months have a prize for whoever invested the best." Linda Olson, InterVarsity staff
10. Stuff you can do this week: 1. Inform us of all of your missions trips both teams and individuals domestic and overseas. We will publish all the outreach that is happening around the BFC. We also desire to keep statistics of all BFC outreach activities. 2. Consider opening up your missions team to others beyond your church. We will promote all such opening here. 3. Promote Let’s Fish in your church. Make sure all short term participants, students interested in Urbana, Youth Leaders, Missions Organizers, and Pastors are part of our group. To join simply contact us at office@bfcbom.org.
