1.  Short Term Teams Do Count!

(A true story submitted by Randy serving in Central Asia)

One day an elderly gentleman was walking down a familiar beach when he saw a little boy in the distance. As he approached he noticed the boy tossing things in the water and realized that he was trying to save the starfish that wash up daily on this particular beach. The man slowly walked up to the boy and tried to explain the situation to him.

"Son", he said, "I walk this beach every morning and these starfish wash up every day. They fill this entire stretch of beach, there are literally millions of them that die, it's just part of their lifecycle." As the boy seemed to ignore him, he continued, " you will never make a difference by throwing them back one at a time, for every one you throw back another ten wash up. You are wasting your time, besides; you will be here all day and not make a dent in this swarm of dying starfish. You have a kind heart, but this is simply a place where you can not make a difference.

The little boy finally responded as he bent over, picked up another starfish and tossed it far into the surf, "I made a difference for THAT One"

There is one young local man who is looking for his place in ministry. A few years ago a short term group spent a summer in his town and one young girl did everything they tell you not to do with Muslims. She told him there is only one way to heaven and that means your religion is wrong!!  That comment led him down a path to finding Christ and serving in his church. The leadership noticed his heart for God, sent him to Seminary and he is now looking for his place in the kingdom to reach his people for Christ.

There are millions people in Central Asia. That young girl did not make a dent in that number. But she made a difference for One.

And who knows how many more through him.

2.  Feed Back

Dear Pastor Weller,

I went to the Urbana site on the web last night.  Urbana looks awesome!  If I am serious about missions, it looks like the place I should be this December.

Bev

Hi Bev,

Urbana IS awesome!  I suggest you register early last time some of our kids were turned away because registration was full. Get the video from us here at the BOM or order it on line (its free!).  Show it to your church group and keep the spark of interest alive.  One suggestion---Urbana is not cheap.  Start saving now and the financial shock will not be so bad!  If you start right now it will cost you about 12 bucks a week.  Also practice this line,  Uncle Harry, do you really want to know what I want for Christmas this year?  --Money for my Urbana Fund!  Keep reading Let’s Fish and we will keep you posted on transportation opportunities.

Blessings,

Dana

Keep those letters rolling in!!!

3.  New Opportunities for “longer” short term

UPDATED

Greetings from Usandawe!

Just was wondering if you could help me with the need a short term team for some MK children's ministry.  Each year the AIM missionaries of Tanzania have a week long conference in November. I'm in charge of the children's program this year - what had been done in the past is for a group of people from someone's supporting church to come  - it has been a real blessing to the missionaries and kids as well as to the team that serves. Usually the team that comes just does the VBS program from their church - the MK's really look forward to this - it is like their camp and VBS. Here is a quick outline of the purpose of the team:

1. Encourage the MK's of AIM Tanzania.

2. Fellowship with AIM missionaries in Tanzania - learning about different ministries within Tanzania.

3. You will also be working with national Bible college students who help with the children's work - it is a great opportunity for them to learn about children's ministries. ( Don't worry they know somw English and like the opportunity to practice it as well) This outreach can be as short as about 10 days or if they want to visit Usandawe it can be extended to include that.

Greetings from Usandawe!

Just a quick clarification the children's ministry team - we only need 3-4 people for this ministry -it is not a large team. Also, the conference dates are around Nov. 19th - Nov.26th. Kim Stengele

6.  Insight into the heart of a young single missionary

Hello all

I wanted to thank you once again for your prayers. I had a good outing with the family and enjoyed the beach most of all. We swam almost all day. It was really nice...But instead of going into details about this trip I wanted to share with you a little bit about what is going on here in the Philippines this week. NOW this is only my understanding of what will happen since I have never experienced such things.

I am sharing these things with you so you can really be praying for me, other missionaries, Filipino Christians, and the very many who are lost here.

HOLY WEEK is a very BIG deal here in the Philippines. For the past month or so a couple of times a week women in the Catholic church sing the PASSION (life of Jesus) over the loud speaker. Then starting tonight there will be a huge procession going down the street. There may be Flagellants (people believe they need to still help Jesus today with His burden. SO they make a vow that they will be a flagellant for so many years....They make their wipe and put little pieces of bamboo at the end. For each strand is how many years they vow to do this...If a strand breaks off then that means this year did not count!)

So this procession will start around 6pm tonight (Wed. night here 6am Wed Eastern time- PA) It starts from the main Catholic church in our time and goes around the time making a huge loop.

Last night there was a small procession but noone really knew why because Wed and Friday are the big ones. Anyway just last night I saw these floats with idols/ statues of Jesus and Mary on them (By the way they call them "images" here). One float had the 2 disciples sleeping while Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane...They had Jesus with Roman Guards and then also Him on a cross. There was Mary wearing black in mourning and then Mary in white with an angel by her side....

I do not know the meaning of all of this. But they reenact in a sense the life of Christ. A priest will also select 12 men to be the disciples and he will wash there feet.,

This past Sunday was Palm Sunday. People purchased these woven palm branches to take to the church and have them be blessed by the priest. Then they hang it above their house to keep away evil spirits or to keep safe from lightning.

On Friday our class is going on a field trip to see the Crucifixions (yes more than one) that do actually happen here. I am told the people do not die from it. But are only up for a few minutes..But they do have a nail hammered through their hands and feet. The nail is long but very thin....

Then Saturday is a very quite and grim day I am told because Jesus is Dead!!!

This is really all I know and as I said it is just my understanding.

PLEASE PLEASE pray for this spiritually dark time as Filipinos worship these idols in a sense and believe they need to punish themselves (Flagellants) to share Christ with His burden. Christ has already paid the price for us all! Pray that these people would come to know this TRUTH!

Pray for us to be spiritually strong...Who knows what the devil will do during this time...

Thank you for your prayers. I will try to get some pictures sent to you afterwards. (my friend has a digital camera)

God Bless

and Happy Easter

Amy

8.  Final Thought

God said:  “When you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.  Jeremiah 29:13  the Message.

Moses said:  “He is a God who is passionate about his relationship with you.” Exodus 34:14 NLT
