Balance

By Dana Weller

This cartoon* demonstrates in a light hearted way the need for balance in our lives. The same God that provided an opportunity for you to use your abilities in a cross cultural way this summer is the same God who calls you to be salt and light in your own community.

Missions does not start when you get to your short term destination, but rather missions starts as you heed the call of God to be a witness to your family, friends, and community.

After that you need to move on to the cross cultural opportunities that come your way. Look for the exchange student in your school or at your work place, the new ethnic family that recently moved into your neighborhood. Look around, the world is at your doorstep. Places like Dorney Park and I am sure other seasonal employers have a whole program to hire internationals.

A careful reading of the Great Commission reveals not four different choices from which we choose an area of ministry, but reflects rather that our Jerusalem and our Judea and our Samaria, and our world are all equal responsibilities of service.

It is my prayer that your ministry trip this summer will be an event of a lifetime; An event that will change your world view. Just remember the trip is not the fulfillment of your responsibility to the Great Commission, it is just the beginning!

Fall Ministry Opportunity

Greetings:

I am writing to ask if your church would like to partner with Blueberry Mountain Bible Camp in an outreach Sept. 10-11, 2005. Sept. 10, the ministry will be from 9AM to dark and the 11th from 1Pm to 5PM. They are projecting 500 to attend, both saved and unsaved.

On those dates, Wycliff Mission Agency and a local church are partnering together to sponsor a "Mission at the Airport" at a small airport in Dixfield. Wycliff will have an airplane and helicopter available for rides. Several churches and para-church groups are coming alongside this ministry to participate in the weekend outreach. CEF will be doing the Wordless Book and face painting.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please respond to bdsloma@juno.com and I will contact you with more details.

Ideas for outreach can include music, balloons, skits, puppets, painting, cotton candy, pop corn, hot and cold drinks, snacks, chips etc... even hot food or if you have a neat idea, lets talk.

Nelson's Nuggets - Blowing Gabriel’s Horn, Gabriel Brothers, That Is!
Many of you know that I am always on the lookout for stuff as I call it to take overseas to distribute to those less fortunate than you and me. Well I found another source for that stuff and it is called Gabriel Brothers, or Gabes as those that shop there frequently affectionately refer to it. Gabes has about 25-30 stores spread out over Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland, and they sell overstocks, seconds and damaged goods, mostly clothing. The closest one to us is in Harrisburg. On our last trip to Thailand we took quite a pile of underwear for both girls and boys, it didn’t clean out my stock but dented it real good. Well this past weekend as I returned from visiting my father who just had both colon and gall bladder surgery, I stopped at about every Gabes along the route. It seems they were having a $10 bag sale. First, the bag I was given was huge and I stuffed it full to the rim, almost fifteen bags altogether. I got underwear, hundreds of pairs, socks, t-shirts, jeans, even suntan lotion and block. One bag alone had over 300 pair of underwear in it., that works out to around three cents a pair. Now find that at Kohl’s, Macy’s, or even WalMart. The thing I have seen this year, more than ever before is this, “the faster I give it away, the faster I get it back, and in larger quantities.” God is still good all the time, and he has been very good to us and our ministry. Gabriel Brothers is not for everyone, but I stop there every chance I get, and I know many that are happy that I do! Thanks and God Bless!
 Final Thoughts
The concept of a balanced approached to your missionary calling has been a recurring theme on Let’s Fish over the years. Theologically speaking, there is probably no one who would argue the point. The most glaring problem is getting from theological understanding to practical implementation.

It is important to have a game plan. I suggest if you are a student, that you become proactive in seeking out an international student at your school on the very first day of classes. Some of Nai’s (our student) closest friends were girls who were simply willing to invite her to sit at their lunch table. A Christian girl Christine offered to mentor her after school in a subject she was having trouble in. Christie became a close friend.

LOOK AROUND & ask God to give you an opportunity to develop a close international friend. Do it TODAY!

Let’s go fishing!
