1.  Journal from Rebecca Zubrick

If you are a regular reader of Let’s Fish, you know that I have been advocating journal writing while on a missions trip.  God teaches you so many lessons, you see so much, you meet so many people, and you would never be able to keep all of this information in your memory.  It is after you get home that your journal takes on a special significance as you reread all that you learned and saw.  There is however a tremendous value in taking the time to process a day on paper prior to going to bed.

Here is this week’s entry from Panama:

I don’t know where all the keys are on this thing, so bear with me please! I absolutely love it here. It is so beautiful, warm and oh is it gorgeous! The mountains, the blue sky, the tropical flowers and the banana trees are out of this world. I have never eaten so many delicious fruits! It is amazing. I am going to miss that very much. Every morning I wake up to a jungle. It is amazing. I continue to meet new people and try to remember their names.

The need for Jesus is great here. There are so many people that are lost. It is hard to talk about Jesus because my Spanish is soooo bad. Please pray for me. I really want to learn more Spanish, I want to be able to understand when people talk and be able to talk back in larger sentences. I am so lost. Most of the time I zone out. It is very difficult because everyone speaks so fast!!! Please pray for Mary, and her twins and son, as life is difficult for them. There isn’t hardly any food, and the situation with her husband is bad. Pray that he repents and turns to God and gets some help.

Life is very different here. I have never seen so many dogs in my life!!! The streets are rough and made out of dirt and rocks. People drive like mad men here!! Every time I ride public transportation, I pray for my life!!!!!!! The living conditions of so many are so sad and depressing. People don’t know how to finance their money and use it wisely. People’s priorities are not in place. Here, you can’t leave your house empty (like someone has to be watching it at all times). People break in and steal all the time. I never go out by myself, I always have to be with someone and back home before it gets dark. Here it gets dark between 6:15 and 7:00, depending on the night.

Pray that I will be able to share the love of Jesus, even though my Spanish is so bad. Also, please pray that <god will continue to heal my numerous bug bites that itch so badly!!! Pray that God will continue to lead and direct me. I desire to know him more and to know where he is leading me in the future. Pray that he will reveal them to me and give me peace at heart.

If you have a special journal entry from a recent trip, please share it with us.

2.  Feed Back

I'd love to be at the 9/21 feed back but I'll be at headquarters in Orlando.

If you produce a paper on this I'd like a copy.

Thanks.

Aaron

We will have two mission trips out at that date.  One will be a work team in Poland and another will be going to visit Rick Erb in Donetsk, Ukraine and then with the Moyers in Magny, France. I will ask Bill and Shirley Novak, who have headed up teams to Poland to attend.

Thanks,

 Jake

5.  Nelson’s Short-Term Nuggets

Last evening I attended my friend Steve’s softball game, he is a member of First Baptist Church in Bethlehem.  Shortly after I arrived I found out that the other team was from Ebenezer Bible Fellowship, and shortly after that I was handed an application to a 5K (3.1 mile) run sponsored by Ebenezer on August 30.  The reason I mention it here is that the proceeds of the run will benefit children in two Christian run orphanages in Romania.  The organizers of the run have been to the orphanages and God has burdened their hearts to continue to support these ministries.  I have run in these types of events for years and for many worthwhile causes, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, United Way, etc., and never have I run to support a Christian orphanage but that will change come August 30I plan to be there and will hopefully bring some friends, and I hope that you and some other members of your church will be there as well.  The entry fee is $15 if you register before August 20 and they guarantee you a t-shirt.  Please call the church for an application (610) 868-5501.  You can look for me; I will be the tall guy bringing up the rear!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6.  Final Thought

“Pray that God will continue to lead and direct me. I desire to know him more and to know where he is leading me in the future. Pray that he will reveal them to me and give me peace at heart.”

The words jumped off of the page.  Here is a high school teen asking that we pray for God’s guidance for her future!  Rebecca is a bright eyed girl who has attended RWR retreats with me.  She was always serious about her faith.

It did not surprise me when she committed to giving herself to a summer of missions…. a time to find herself, to listen to God, to sharpen her language skills.  It seemed so natural!  IT all began with a short term trip with her family to Atlanta; Rebecca caught the “bug”!  When I printed the above journal entry (item 1) I had the feeling of a proud spiritual father.  You see, Rebecca and her family have kept me in the loop as she began her odyssey.  We talked, we prayed, she was always so very serious!

I am writing this because Rebecca is not so unusual.  This kind of serious thinking by our young people is often the norm.  There is Elizabeth, Alicia, Angela, Rachel, Kevin, Sukey, Julie, Andrea, Danielle, Kelly, Dave, Jonathan, and a host of others.  Quality teens and young adults that are serious, very serious about the Kingdom!

I think of those on the field right now as career missionaries, who just a few short years ago demonstrated this same passion.  Amy, Chico, Jason, Jenny, Mark, Scott, Kyle, Randy and a host of others.

Those who say our next generations lack vision and purpose certainly do not walk in the same circles as I do.  God is at work!  Yes, Rebecca we will pray for you and for all who share your passion!

Most of all, Keep Fishing!

Dana
