1.  God’s Calling; A Bible Study

Read: Joshua 1:1-9

1. What is Joshua's call? What are the conditions which led to the call?

2. Do you know what your call is? What do you think God wants you to do for Him? For His people?

 3. List as you read these verses:

• God's promises to Joshua

 • God's commandments and conditions for Joshua

4. Summarize in one sentence God's promises and God's commands.

 5. Why does God emphasize the need for Joshua to be strong and courageous? What do you think Joshua was feeling at this point?

6. How does the command to be strong and courageous apply to you? How are you feeling?

 7. Think about what God wants to do in your life as well as the lives of the missionaries, fellow students, and other people that you know. What promises and commands apply to you? How will you obey?

 8. Make plans now as to how you will obey God's commands to you.

 9. Thank God for His promises to you.

Update On You-Know-Where: As Official T-Shirt-Hander-Outer-Person I recieved a box full of "English Exchange" Tee-Shirts. It's so exciting! I can touch it and feel it and it's so real. I'm going, I have to go - or they won't get their T-shirts. My church also made a snazzy little prayer calendar telling you where I'm going and what I'm doing each day, to put in the bulletin. I will send you that sometime.

Things I Need, in case people are wishing they could be party of this excitement like I always used to do when somebody else was getting to do something like this:

A really big suitcase with wheels

Job applications (they're learning English for jobs, so they want to see American job applications)

Restaurant menus (they like to see these too)

No, I'm not going to say I'm excited again. I am not, I am not... Oh, yes, I will not be sending anyone letters because they take 3 weeks to travel and so I'll get back before my letter does. So, communication blackout. No mail. Maybe e-mail, if they loan me their laptop, but who has time for that at camp? If I do write to my parents I'll have them forward it to this loop. Now this is getting as big as Russia after all, so enough.

        Love,

                Elizabeth Studenroth

3.  Man Are You Rich!

There are over 6 billion people living on the planet. If we could shrink the world's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, where would you rank in terms of wealth (1 being the poorest, 100 being the wealthiest)?

Answer:

Well, you can decide about where you'd fit in: 80 would live in substandard housing and 70 would be unable to read. 59% of the world's wealth would belong to only 6 six people, all of whom would be American

In the same village, how many people do you think would have a college education?

(18)

How many would own a computer?

(19)

How many would suffer from malnutrition?

(50)

5.  Follow-up on the Paris Prayer Conf.

Dear Dana,

7 people and 4 interns attended the Paris Prayer Conference 2003.  Though it was not the numbers we were hoping for, the Lord used this time in some significant ways in the lives of those who attended, those who spoke and in the lives of church members who were prayed for.  It was encouraging to see how this group of individuals from across the US (we were joined by a German couple for 2 days as well) became a “prayer team” by week’s end, and to see once again how encouraged the French believers were by the prayers of these people.  Prayer is the work we need to be involved in, and is at the start as well as all the way through the work of church planting.  Thanks for your prayers.  We would encourage churches to seriously consider sending a group to next year’s conference in June 2004.  Details can be gotten by writing to me: david.riddell@wanadoo.fr

In His grace,

David

6.  Jesus, Lover Of My Soul

by Amy Carden

The other day, a friend said to me, “Hey, Amy! I ran into your twin last night when I was hanging out downtown.” That wouldn’t be so odd, except that I don’t have a twin. But apparently, there is someone in Madison, Wisconsin, who looks just like me. Afterwards, I began to wonder about this “clone” of mine. Was she nice, funny, or interesting to talk to? When someone tells me I resemble someone, I always hope it’s a positive thing. Unfortunately, the images of ourselves that we see reflected in others are not always positive.

Studying the book of Hosea recently, I saw a frustrating resemblance between myself and the Israelites. Even after being delivered from slavery in Egypt, they embraced idols and other gods to try and find satisfaction. As I reflected on their behavior, I saw myself in their actions. Over and over, God has shown me His love, protection and mercy. Does that mean that my life has been the picture of utter faithfulness? Unfortunately not. Instead, I often find myself saying along with the Israelites, “Come, let us return to the Lord.”

Thankfully, the God who welcomed the Israelites back, who said of them, “I will heal their waywardness and love them freely” (Hosea 14:4), is the same “yesterday, today and forever.” He continues to love his wayward children, of which I am one.

The hymn “Jesus, Lover of my Soul” by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) expresses this love incomparably well. Take some time to meditate and reflect upon the immense love that God has for you, wayward child though you may be.

8.  Final Thought

How do you say good-by?

On July 5 I will give the girl just three days short of  her 18th birthday, a final hug.  She will turn and walk away and I will never see her again.  She will have been part of my wife’s and my life for one 330 days, but on July 5 she will go back home literally to  the other side of the world.

Planted deep on her heart will be the seeds of the Gospel placed there by many “sowers”.  Christian teens that took her under their wings and befriended her both at school and at church, and adults that spent time talking to her about her life’s perspective and her soul. Quick calculations come up with over 50 different believers that have impacted her life.

She will get on a Northwestern flight and be gone…gone forever.  Many of those 50 people mentioned above have already said their good-bys.  My dreaded last hug is only nine days away!  Such events impress upon us the finality of the need to share the Gospel.  Planting season can be so very short, my only hope is that those seeds so lovingly planted will be brought to life by the Spirit of God.

My final thought is I know I only have nine more days with my international daughter; the reality is that you may have even LESS time with some of your best friends and not even know it!  The Gospel seed you were planning to plant and never got around to it may be a missed opportunity cut short at anytime. At almost every commencement this year, there is a roll call of those students who died prior to graduation.  Lives cut short before they even reached age 19!

I know I only have nine more days with my daughter, how many days do you have left with your friends?

See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!

Most of all, Keep Fishing!

Dana
