An Army Of One

Dana Weller

Now there is a contradiction! Although it has been a great recruiting tool for the military, it has caused great turmoil within the ranks. The slogan smacks in the face the very core value of interdependency so needed in battle. “While the rank and file are appalled by the slogan and the message it sends, the Army's senior leaders are pleased with the positive response from the target audience and ignore the contradictions.” (This statement is from a recent editorial in a military journal).

Let’s get one thing straight. In the ranks of the soldiers in the Kingdom of God, there is NO PLACE for the “one”! From recruitment to the battle field, it is imperative to promote the team. We use the term “short term team”. One recently said to me, “I am going ALONE on a missions trip this summer, should I register my trip in Let’s Fish?” My answer was “ABSOLUTLY!” There is a sense that all of you reflected in the trips recorded in item #5 below are part of one team. If you are one or a part of a team of twenty, you are part of the “troops” being sent out into God’s harvest field. DON”T forget that everyone who invested financially into your trip and those committed to pray for you are also part of the team. Make sure you do everything possible to ensure that all of your partners are fully involved.

An army of one makes as much sense as attempting to play football by yourself.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each.
For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. –Paul

 An Opportunity to Impact Others
If your short-term mission experience allows you to develop a close relationship with someone in the host country, you could have a profound effect on another person. God has designed us to be intensely relational beings. When we purposefully get together with someone who is different from ourselves with the intention and expectation of really getting to know them, stuff happens. The gospel happens. The indomitably curious human spirit takes over and we twist our lives together in a way that allows the gospel to come in an incarnate form. Remember, there are still a two billion people on earth who have yet to hear the good news for the very first time. Let Jesus live through you naturally as you express his love, care, joy, and values in the context of relationship.

 Ministry Opportunity

Summer 2005 are you busy?

Let me know if you &/or your family would be interested in helping at an English Camp in Czech Republic this summer. The approximate dates are July 20-Aug 2. You would need to raise your support (approx. $450 besides your plane ticket). At this moment, I know of one person who is ready to go. Will you allow God to use you in this ministry in 2005?

 Feedback
Hi Nelson,
I enjoy "Let's Fish", and have received many helpful hints and ideas. Thanks for sending it to me.
About those "older" folks - THIS 76 year old woman is leading a short term Missions Trip this summer to Kenya to teach Vacation Bible School at a Children's Home/Orphanage. So, age need not be a hindrance, but can be a blessing !!

Blessings,
Lois Draper
(Lois Draper is a retired missionary and pastor’s wife. She is a fantastic example for all you young people to be totally committed to Christ’s vision for this world!!)

You Might Be a Rookie ...

Here are this week’s additions submitted by Chico Schlonecker:
You might be a rookie short-termer if . . .

  • You get upset that there is water all over the bathroom because shower curtains are nonexistent and the water nozzle is not attached to the wall but comes in the form of a metal hose.
  • You think that people understand you better the LOUDER you talk.

You can see the entire list AND send your you might be a rookie short-termer at our Let’s Fish weblog
