Team Safety

Dana Weller

I received the following e-mail from one of our missionaries this week:

Dear Prayer Partners,
We have been doing well here in Bolivia but have a prayer item. Last night President Carlos Mesa of Bolivia handed in his resignation. If he leaves office then Bolivia would have to put into office their third president in two years. The congress must approve his resignation before he is actually out of office. Today has been filled with marches and also roadblocks in support of the president. Our kids did not have school today. As we watch the TV tonight (8:45 p.m.), there are marches in most cities in support of Pres. Mesa. There are certain groups who oppose him and have been making life miserable at times for his stay in office. Well we will know by tomorrow what will happen but would appreciate that you would be in prayer for the country.
Thanks,
Tony and Joanna

I have been asked quite often over the course of taking people on short term trips, “is this trip safe?” That is an impossible question to answer! Political situations can change in a moment’s notice.

Safety for a team is in the Lord’s hands and can never be guaranteed by a team leader. After all the precautions are taken and we should be very diligent in such precautions and never reckless, the greatest safety endeavor is still prayer!

Tony and Joanna have evacuation plans in place (as do most of our missionaries) but when a need arises, their first line of defense is to seek an army or prayer warriors! Over the next weeks we will be addressing many practical safety issues. Let be begin by emphasizing safety precaution number one:

Proverbs 21:31 I believe sets the priority for all safety advice:

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

Be prepared but TRUST GOD!

Leaving with a group of college age girls for a trip to Morocco just one day before the war started, things as you can imagine were quite tense. College administrators, parents and the team were in a circle holding hands and praying prior to departure. One dad but it this way in his prayer: “Lord we believe it is your will for this team to be in Morocco. My daughter is safer in that Arab country even in these most uncertain of times than she is if she remain behind seeking refuge here in the States against Your will!”

I never forgot that prayer. You see as leader of that trip, I had many misgivings about going. I externally was keeping a stiff upper lip, but in my heart there was raging doubt and fear. I kept mulling over was I stupid to take these girls into such an uncertain situation? The answer was clear after that prayer, I would be stupid to back away from what was definitely God’s calling for our team!

So we begin with safety tip number one:

Be prepared but TRUST GOD!
